Born in 1977 in Turku, Bass-baritone Nicholas Söderlund started his musical education at the Turku Conservatory with Hannu Kerkola and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Sauli Tiilikainen. In 1999-2001 Söderlund studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Prof. Heiner Hopfner, and since 2001 he has been studying at the church music department of the Sibelius Academy, where his teachers have been Peter Lindroos and at the moment Erkki Rajamäki.

A scholar of the Selim Eskelin Foundation in 2004-05, Söderlund won the second prize at the Lappeenranta National Singing Competition 2006 and spent the Summer 2007 in Bayreuth as a scholar of the Finnish Wagner Society.

Nicholas Söderlund has been a bass-soloist with several main church-music compositions performed in Finland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and others. During the last year he has been singing the leading part in Jiri Pauer´s children opera Lörpöttelevä etana. He has also made several recordings on cd as well as for the Yle Radio in Finland.

Subsequent to his debut at the Finnish National Opera debut in Fredrik Pacius’ The Hunt of King Charles in January 2007, he’s been invited to sing Schaunard in La Bohème and Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte, as well as productions of  EtanaIsän Tyttö, King Karl’s Hunt and Pohjalaisia  in 2008/09. In that same season, he also performs Colline/La Bohème at  the Basel Opera.
