Jyrki Korhonen was born in Finland and completed his studies at the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki, where he also participated in many studio productions. Subsequently he he attended the International Opera Studio in Zurich.

While engaged at the Wiesbaden and Darmstadt operas between 1993 and 2000, Mr. Korhonen appeared as a guest artist in different opera houses throughout Europe and often performed at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, until he joined the permanent ensemble in 2001. Since then, he has been performing an important number of leading roles, including Sarastro, Ochs/Der Rosenkavalier, Osmin/Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Basilio/Il Barbiere di Siviglia as well as an increasing number of Wagner roles.

Mr. Korhonen’s recordings include the 1998 release of Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Vigilia and a CD with songs of this same composer written especially for the young bass which was released in September 2003.

Having worked together with many renowned conductors including Daniel Barenboim, Nicolaus Harnoncourt, Mikko Franck, Antonio Pappano, Zubin Mehta, Mark Albrecht, Leif Segerstam, Christian Thielemann, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Peter Schneider, Sir Simon Rattle, and Riccardo Chailly, he has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Festival Musica Canarias, the Cesarea Festival Israel, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, the Orchestra del Teatro Massimo, and many others.

Besides his appearances as Fafner at the renowned Bayreuth Festival in 2006, Mr. Korhonen has sung Fasolt in Munich, Hunding with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, in Rouen, Cincinnati and on tour in Madrid, Lissabon, Athens, Vienna and Baden-Baden under the baton of Christian Thielemann; Fafner in Madrid, Hagen in Tokyo, and others. Further guest engagements until 2008 have taken him to Amsterdam, Basel (Nabucco), Berlin, Budapest, Florida Grand Opera, Marseille, the Savonlinna Opera Festival (Rigoletto, Les contes d’Hoffmann), Opéra du Rhin (Fidelio, 2008), Tokyo and the Wiener Staatsoper (Sarastro).
